New standard alert: ISO 17298:2025 — ISO 17298: Biodiversity for organizations – Guidelines and Requirements

Oct 7 / PATRICA JOYCE N.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has today launched the world’s first International Standard dedicated to supporting organizations globally to take action on biodiversity, during its Annual Meeting 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda on 7 October 2025. Until now, biodiversity practice was fragmented. ISO 17298 establishes common language, steps, and controls to move from pledges to performance.

Why ISO 17298 matters

USD 44 trillion – over half the world’s GDP – is moderately or highly dependent on nature. As biodiversity risks grow, so do regulatory, reputational, and operational pressures. ISO 17298 helps you move from intention to action.
Whether you’re a business, local authority, NGO or public institution, this standard supports you to:
  • Understand your biodiversity impacts, dependencies and risks
  • Identify opportunities for green growth and nature-positive finance
  • Align with global frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)
  • Develop and implement a credible biodiversity action plan
