Madrid/Lisbon, 03 February 2025, Amazon and Iberdrola sign new 476MW Solar and Wind energy Power Purchase Agreements

By 2023, Amazon completely offset its electricity consumption across operations with investments in renewable energy generation and was recognized as the largest corporate renewable energy buyer for four consecutive years – with over 600 renewable energy projects worldwide. The company continues to show its commitment to achieving its Net Zero target by 2040.
On 3 February 2025, the e-commerce and tech giant signed new power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 476MW in Portugal and Spain. This includes a €350 million PPA for 219MW from Iberdrola’s Tâmega Wind Complex, which marks Amazon’s first procurement in Portugal and is set to become the country’s largest operational wind farm, utilising existing grid infrastructure. At its peak, it will provide over 700 jobs and supply clean electricity to approximately 128,000 households. The two additional PPAs in Spain comprise a 45MW solar PV plant and an eleven-turbine 212MW wind farm, whose turbines reach a height of 107.5 metres and have a rotor diameter of 145 metres.
These three projects are expected to produce 1,093 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity each year, which can supply power to more than 300,000 households. Long-term Power PPAs are essential for minimizing investment risks, facilitating financing, and speeding up the energy transition by providing revenue stability for renewable energy utilities.
Since 2022, Amazon has secured over 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola across five countries, including the US, Germany, and the UK, throughout the duration of all signed PPA agreements. This further solidifies Iberdrola’s position as Europe’s top seller of corporate PPAs for the second year running, per the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025 report.
